How to Make a Fortune

February 3, 2010

It just today that I was sitting at my desk wondering what my stomach was trying to tell me while it hungrily growled at me and then it hit me like a pregnancy craving so intense and so demanding (or at least what I think a pregnancy craving would feel like since I haven’t yet been blessed with that experience)!  The sudden craving was for Pei Wei’s Chicken and Lettuce Wraps!  So I instantly called up and ran over to pick them up.  I ran excitingly to my desk only to find that I was full in about 5 bites and they joy would have to be savored another day.  However, one thing sat on my desk waiting on me like a queen and daring me to open it’s vanilla colored shell.  It’s bad luck I tell myself to have anything Chinese and not open your fortune cookie after!  So I crack it’s crispy shell, take a delicious sweet bite and read my newest fortune “Doors will be opening for you in many areas of your life.”

After the let down of not becoming the newest Mrs. Channing Tatum the prospects of doors opening for me seemed pretty dim.  But that aside this fortune cookie had an effect on me and the edges of my mouth began to curve upwards.  I sometimes think that Horoscopes and Fortunes are less of a forshadowing and more of a Psychological Motivational tool.  See I in some ways believe this is a message from God telling me that he has a plan for me and that great things are coming my way, but I also believe that it’s not just going to happy and I am going to have to push to see the doors start opening (unless they have that awesome bit handicap button where you lazily push it and the door opens magically for you).

Let’s be real for a minute and become my best friend who I can confide in and eat a tub of ice cream infront of without judgement.  So now that you’re my best friend I can tell you that unlike most photographers this wasn’t always my dream.  Yes I loved to take pictures especially with a poloraid, but mostly I wanted to do one thing – be a Fashion Designer.  I am and will always be obsessed with everything Fashion.   I had a plan to go to Fashion school, study abroad in Paris and then live in a big city and be the next big thing and Mary Mc.Dreamy (like Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama).

Now I won’t get into the whole story about how I fell in love with photography, we will save that for another post or for those who are actually interested.

I wanted to take the time to challenge all of you today who have a dream to go out & make it a reality!  Wake up from this sleep you are in and seize the day!  If you want to be a singer go out there and try out for auditions, and do kareoke nights!  Always remember that just because you are not making money at it doesn’t mean you are not following your dream!  Be proud of your accomplishments & never take a step back out of fear!  Keep moving forward and if you fall down a step or two pick yourself right back up, bandage that boo-boo & keep a steppin’!  Sometimes You’re going to want to cry out of anger and fustration & you may just end up reverting back to childhood and proclaiming through sobs that you want your mommy. In the end all the scrapes and bruises will be just another testimate and proof to the fact that you went out there and you made you dream a reality, even if only for one day!

Next time you open a fortune cookies or a daily inspirational horoscope, read it and really take it and then get off your butt and make it happen!

I’m not trying to make a fortune in this business, I’m just trying to make a fortune come true.
